Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt pressed charges against an adviser of Senator John Cornyn, accusing him of endangering him and his family by posting personal information of his.
The accusation took place after Matt Mackowiak, a senior adviser to Cornyn, posted images including personal information when seeking to accuse him of committing voter fraud in 2016.
Fox News Houston reported that Hunt accepted to press charges against Mackowiak when asked about it by law enforcement.
The doxxing report is being investigated by the High Tech Crimes Unit. Officials told the outlet they intend to subpoena X to retrieve the post with the information, which was then deleted. The subsequent post redacted some parts of an affidavit about Hunt's lack of voter ID.
The Hunt campaign released a statement regarding the matter, saying that "in this current climate of political violence, doxxing the home address of a sitting Member of Congress or his family isn't 'hardball politics.' It's reckless. It's dangerous. It's illegal. And it puts lives at risk."
"The Cornyn campaign's silence on the matter can only mean one thing: they condone it. Because when you don't condemn illegal behavior that endangers public officials, candidates, and their families, you are implicitly approving it. That is beneath the standard of a United States Senator. And it is disqualifying for someone who wants to continue serving as one," the statement added.
Mackowiak reacted to the development, saying the issue is covered by public information laws and he obtained the documents legally from Harris County officials.
Hunt is polling in third place in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas behind Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. A Pulse Decision Science survey from this week showed Paxton getting 36% of the support, compared to Cornyn's 27% and Hunt's 15%. 22% of the respondents said they are still undecided.
Another poll from earlier this month, conducted by the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs, showed that Paxton got 38% of the support, compared to Cornyn's 31%. 17% said they are likely to vote for Wesley Hunt and 12% of respondents said they are undecided.
Paxton would also have the lead in an eventual runoff between the two candidates getting the most votes in the primary. He leads Cornyn with all key demographics except Latino voters.
