FT 86 Open Top

Earlier this month, Toyota first released renderings of its new GT 86 convertible design.

Last year, I had an opportunity to test drive the GT 86 twin, Scion FR-S. While I was deeply impressed by the car's energy and personality, I grew concerned after learning the development of a convertible. The FR-S is lightweight, nimble, communicative, and a joy to drive. However, lopping off the roof would mean a combination of cowl shake and extra weight from the necessary chassis reinforcements, both of which are factors that will compromise the lithe FR-S handling.

Finally, Toyota has revealed the official images of the latest FT 86 Open Top on Thursday -- and I just might have to eat my words.

The FT 86 Open Top concept 2+2 convertible is, as far as we can tell, 99 percent of what the production model will look like, and it looks stunning! Beyond the soft top (it isn't clear whether the folding mechanism is manual or powered) and redesigned windshield, the FT 86 Open Top is identical with the coupe.

Underneath the hood, we expect the FT 86 Open Top to receive the same 2.0 liter boxer-four powerplant producing 200 hp mated to the same 6-speed manual or sequential automatic gearbox.

The boldest change found on the FT 86 Open Top is the premium touches in its interior, complete with a two-tone blue and white leather combination with contrasting yellow stitching. It is not confirmed whether the coupe will be available with similar cabin hardware. The remarkable interior may be specifically for concept display purposes only.

Stay tuned as we learn more about the Toyota FT 86 Open Top Concept ahead of the Geneva Motor Show next week.
