After a poorly rated second season of "True Detective" on HBO, it looks like the series may not be returning to the network for a third installment. The Hollywood Reporter says HBO's new chief of programming, Casey Bloys has his eye on other projects.

The news comes from an unnamed "HBO insider" that claims that "a new project from creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely" than a third season of the American anthology crime drama. The insider goes on to say regardless of that news, "the fate of 'True Detective' now fall[s] to [Bloys]."

The decision to not move forward with "True Detective" could be due to the fans and critics reaction to the second season, which was ultimately on the lower side of things. The second season received mixed reviews with praise given to the performances of Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch along with the cinematography and action sequences. However, many critics felt it was weaker than the previous season with most of the criticism focused on the convoluted plot and dialogue. On Metacritic, the season has a score of 61 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews." Comparatively, the first season scored an 87 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "universal acclaim."

Former president of programming Michael Lombardo has previously admitted that he put too much pressure on the "True Detective's" creator to deliver too much, too fast.

Talking to The Frame, Lombardo said he "became too much of a network executive" after the show's massive success and was determined to repeat that in the next year. Pizzolatto, Lombardo says, is a "soulful writer," who, with the second season of True Detective, "had to reinvent the wheel."

Lombardo continued, "Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what [True Detective] is."
