Former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson called for citizenship to be "immediately" stripped from Americans who serve in foreign militaries, specifically citing those who have served in Israel and Ukraine.
When asked by an audience member at the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday about U.S. citizens pledging allegiance to two countries, Carlson called the idea "absurd," adding, "No man can serve two masters, it's not possible," referencing a biblical passage.
"You can only pledge your loyalty to one person or one country, and that's just a fact," Carlson said. "There's also a sense, and this is relevant to me, and I know you're speaking about Israel but it's not just Israel, to be honest...I think anybody, by the way, who serves in a foreign military should lose his citizenship immediately."
"There are a lot of Americans who've served in the IDF, they should lose their citizenship. There's a lot of Americans who've served in Ukraine, and they should lose their citizenship," the Trump ally declared. "You can't fight for another country and remain an American. Period," he continued, eliciting murmurs of agreement from the conservative audience members.
"The Tucker Carlson Show" host then lamented that Americans "have been cowed into being like, 'Oh, that's hate speech.' No, it's not. You don't hear hate in my voice because there isn't any. It's just an obvious recognition of the truth," he declared.
Carlson went on to reveal that he has been offered citizenship by other countries. However, despite acknowledging America's current troubles, citing declining demographics, societal decay, and the deterioration of cities, he emphasized his connection to the country, pointing out that his parents are buried across the street from his home.
"I don't care what happens to America," Carlson declared. "I will be here."
As of February 2024, The Washington Post reported that approximately 23,380 American citizens were serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Additionally, more than 200,000 Americans hold dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship and currently reside in Israel.
According to the United Service Organizations (USO), over 100,000 American troops are currently deployed or permanently stationed in Europe in support of NATO allies and Ukraine. Additionally, in a March 2022 statement, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reported that more than 20,000 foreign volunteers had joined the Ukrainian armed forces, including an estimated several thousand American citizens.
