An attorney has revealed that Washington man Travis Decker, who murdered his own three daughters, sought help from the Department of Veterans Affairs for his declining mental health but was turned away.
Travis's ex-wife Whitney had previously shared that the 32-year-old veteran was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Decker was homeless when he kidnapped the pair's three children on May 30, according to the US Sun.
"Travis did contact me after the hearing and say, 'How do I get these evaluations? What do I need to do?'" said attorney Arianna Cozart.
"And I directed him to the VA, because I thought that they would help him," she continued.
"I know that he called the VA and said that he needed to get a psychiatric evaluation, and that they told him they couldn't do that," she revealed.
9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn and 5-year-old Olivia were found having been strangled to death at a campground in Washington on June 2.
Decker's brother has also revealed that Decker "lost his identity" in the years leading up to the grisly murders. Decker is still at large and has not been found since committing the homicides.
It has further been revealed that Decker's mental state had been declining severely before he killed his children. Whitney's lawyer, Cozart, stated that Decker "suddenly felt very alone and was still facing a lot of ramifications of his combat that he saw: nightmares, insomnia, severe insomnia at times."
He became incredibly unstable following his divorce from Whitney, a change which concerned his ex-wife to the point that she requested alterations to their parenting plan in September 2024.
Decker was subsequently ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, an anger management evaluation, and therapy.
Decker, who served as an infantryman in the Army between March 2013 and July 2021 and was deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014, reportedly had PTSD from his time in the Army, according to Cozart.
