What happened to Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage in the 1990s was one of the most controversial events in the history of the royal family. Prince Charles’ illicit affair with Camilla Parker Bowles was so huge a scandal that it caused Prince Charles’ popularity rating to plunge.

But while his affair with Camilla remains to be an interesting subject among web users today, many wonder if it was really Prince Charles who cheated on Princess Diana first. Could it be the other way around?

In 1986, Princess Diana found herself in a difficult position as people started to suspect her of having an affair with her RPO. Their closeness was so obvious that many could not help but believe that there was something going on between them.

True enough, in an interview after her split from the Prince of Wales, Princess Diana admitted that she actually had an affair with James Hewitt. Their affair happened at the time Prince Charles was widely reported to have been cheating on her with his current wife, Camilla.

Princess Diana’s former protection officer and confidante, Ken Wharfe, confirmed Princess Diana’s confession when he revealed in his book “Diana: Closely Guarded Secret” how Hewitt had given Princess Diana the attention and affection that she had been yearning for.

“At first, Diana refused to concede to me that her affair was anything less than innocent,” Wharfe wrote. “‘Nothing is going on,’ she would say, her face flushing red, as we drove back from a tryst,” he added.

He also revealed how Princess Diana and Hewitt would usually meet at an old cottage in Devon owned by Hewitt’s mother. The two only ended their affair when it was already exposed by the media years later.

Although Princess Diana’s affair with Hewitt was true, it was not Princess Diana who cheated first. In fact, several accounts about Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage reveal that Princess Diana had learned about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla weeks before their marriage, when she found a parcel with a bracelet in it.

Later on, someone in his office told her that the bracelet, which was engraved with the letters “G” and “F,” was for Camilla. The letters stood for Prince Charles and Camilla’s nicknames for each other, Gladys and Fred.

Prince Charles and Camilla had met long before the Prince of Wales married Princess Diana. Their romance started in 1970, but they had to split when Prince Charles entered the Navy.

In 1986, Camilla and Prince Charles rekindled their love affair despite being married to Andrew Parker Bowles and Princess Diana, respectively. Princess Diana’s affair with Hewitt did not happen until a few years later.
