While superstars Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie attempt to get back to full-strength after enduring significant injuries, Manchester United and first-year manager David Moyes continue to look for ways to move up the competitive Barclays Premier League table. Currently sitting seventh in the 20-team league just one year removed from another BPL championship, Moyes and company certainly have their work cut out for them if they’re to finish the 2013-2014 campaign in the top 4, but news that two of United’s top players will most likely miss the club’s next match won’t come as an easy pill to swallow.

According to multiple sources, the Red Devils are set to be without Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie when they take the pitch in their next league match at Stamford Bridge. Slated to take on a Chelsea team that currently sits third in the Barclays Premier League behind Manchester City and table-leading Arsenal, Jose Mourinho and the Blues could be in store for a big day if in fact Rooney and RVP can’t make a go of it. Earning 37 points in 21 BPL contests, the Red Devils are in serious need of a boost and even though they’ll enter the Chelsea match coming off a win over Swansea City, Moyes does not believe Wayne Rooney will be ready for action.

“We look as if we could bring him in but then he may have to drop out again, so we just want to nip it in the bud,” Moyes said of Rooney, who has only appeared in three of United’s last eight matches. He also needs a bit of strengthening work in that area, so he will continue working in Egypt because I want to keep him in good shape. We’ve sent somebody with him and hopefully we can get him back and ready to go again.”

While Rooney continues to recover from his setback, running mate Robin van Persie remains hampered by a thigh problem suffered last month. Though it does not appear that either player will see the pitch against Mourinho’s side Sunday, David Moyes will continue to provide updates on the duo ahead of the match.

Rooney and RVP have combined to score 16 goals for United this season while handing out a total of 11 assists. Currently five points behind Liverpool for the fourth spot in the Premier League, Man U will need to muster up everything they have in order to earn points against an extremely talented Chelsea side.
