Queen Elizabeth has been married to Prince Philip for more than seven decades now. Their marriage is one of the most enduring marriages in royal history, and many admire them for setting a great example to many married couples around the world. Like in most relationships, however, there is more than meets the eye.

So many things have already been written about Prince Philip as a father, but not when it comes to his being a husband to the Queen. A Maltese journalist once claimed that while Queen Elizabeth is officially the boss in their relationship when it comes to their private life, Prince Philip actually runs the show.

In a royal documentary, the journalist revealed that Prince Philip bosses Queen Elizabeth around most of the time. “I shouldn’t say this perhaps, I heard him swearing at her,” said John Mizzi.

The incident reportedly happened in the late 1940s, when Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth were still a newly married couple. At that time, Queen Elizabeth joined Prince Philip in Malta, where he was stationed as a naval officer. During their stay, the Queen led a normal life and got so immersed in shopping, sightseeing, gossiping and dancing samba. Prince Philip did not like it, so he told her off.

While their relationship is not always smooth, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip very much complement each other as husband and wife. In fact, Queen Elizabeth does not have any issue with Prince Philip being authoritative sometimes. According to writer and broadcaster Hugo Vickers and royal correspondent Camilla Tominey, Queen Elizabeth loves it when Prince Philip puts his foot down and chastises her whenever she does something wrong.

“The thing with the Queen and Prince Philip is that they both are very, very well matched,” said Vickers. “She took on her same size,” he added.

Queen Elizabeth sees Prince Philip as the only person who has the guts to tell her off if something is not going well, and she loves him for that. She loves the fact that she has a husband who can talk to her directly and can be honest with her at all times. Tominey said it’s a “refreshing change” for someone like Queen Elizabeth to have married someone like Prince Philip, especially since she grew up always getting things her own way.

“I think the Queen herself would be the first one to admit that Prince Philip isn’t somebody who minces his words, who has an opinion on everything and doesn’t mind expressing it,” Tominey said. “For the Queen herself, when you consider she is surrounded by a lot of yes men, actually having a man in her life who tells her what he thinks of what she’s doing is probably a refreshing change,” he added.

No wonder, when Prince Philip celebrated his birthday this year, Queen Elizabeth described her husband as her “constant strength and guide.”
