What Would Be Camilla’s Title If Prince Charles Dies And William Becomes King?

Camilla was once one of the most hated royals, along with Prince Charles, back when Princess Diana revealed their affair on national television. Thankfully, the damage caused by the revelation has mended with time, and royal family fans have slowly warmed up to the Duchess of Cornwall over the years.

One of the biggest indicators that the masses have finally forgiven Camilla is that they’re now genuinely interested in the royal. For instance, someone posted the hypothetical question “If Prince Charles were to pass away before Camilla and then William become king, what would Camilla’s royal title become?” on Quora to see just what might happen to the Duchess of Cornwall if such event comes to pass.

Quora user Leslie Friedrich pointed out that Camilla would have more than one option to choose from since she has more than one royal title. “After they married, Camilla styled her herself HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, although she IS, as Charles’ wife, legally, HRH The Princess of Wales,” Friedrich explained. “She chose not to use this style out of respect for his first wife, Diana.”

Another user, Dafydd Rowlands, basically agreed with Friedrich’s view and elaborated further. “Assuming that in this scenario Charles died before becoming king, Camilla’s legal title would become Her Royal Highness The Dowager Princess of Wales,” Rowlands wrote.

However, Camilla is not likely to use that title since it has been linked to Princess Diana for so long. “Of course, as she has opted not to use her legal title of Princess of Wales so far, it’s likely that she would opt for the equivalent modification of her current style instead Her Royal Highness The Dowager Duchess of Cornwall,” Rowlands added.

But Camilla will have a different title if Charles dies after already becoming the monarch. “If Charles died after becoming king, then Camilla’s legal title would be, depending upon her preference, either Her Majesty Queen Camilla the Queen Dowager or Her Majesty Queen Camilla,” Rowlands explained.

When Prince Charles ascends the throne after her mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Camilla will become the queen consort. However, the Palace will take into consideration what the public’s reaction might be and is prepared to respond accordingly.

“When that time comes, it’s something that will be handled very carefully and we’ll see whether they share the announcement she will be crowned Queen and there’s a public outcry, they then will possibly change it,” royal butler Grant Harrold said.
