Michael Moore has a new documentary “Where To Invade Next” which touches on matters such as laws, cultural practices, prison reforms and policies in different European countries like Finland, France and Italy. Although the tone in the film is more upbeat than in any other of his films, it compares the approaches to healthcare, gun control and education to how the U.S. handles those issues, and it doesn’t shed great light on America. “I will invade countries with names I can mostly pronounce, take the things we need from them and bring it all home,” says Moore. “The American dream seems to be alive and well everywhere but America.”
The movie received an R rating from the MPAA, meaning minors will not be able to go see the film without an adult accompanying them. Moore feels the drastic decision is only to deter viewers from watching the documentary. “The MPAA just denied my appeal to overturn their R rating for WHERE TO INVADE NEXT. What are they afraid of? Sex, Drugs, Truth. My 6th R doc,” tweeted the Academy-Award-winning director.
The documentary was very well received in its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, and later had its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 2. It also won the audience award at the Hamptons International Film Festival and will be opening in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on December 23.
