Update: The new pope is Cardinal Jorge Mario from Argentina.

White smoke billowed from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel today. The infamous white smoke was accompanied by the ringing of the bells of St. Peter's Basilica, signifying that a new pope has been elected to head the world's Roman Catholic Church.

The faithful that have been congregating outside the Vatican in St. Peter's Square broke into cheers when the smoke signal first appeared.

The next step will take place when French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the senior cardinal in the order of the deacons, steps onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and announces, "Habemus Papam," translated from Latin meaning, "We have a pope."

The senior cardinal will then reveal the 267th supreme pontiff's birth name and his chosen name, now that he is pope. After his name is revealed, the new pope will step onto the balcony and greet the ever-growing crowd below.
