Barack Obama delivered a fiery speech from the White House today announcing new executive actions aimed at stronger gun control. At the conclusion of Obama’s speech, he highlighted the story of Zaevion Dobson, 15, who was shot dead trying to protect 3 women from shots being fired from outside a friend’s house. The Knoxville, Tennessee high school student was visiting a friends in December when a drive-by shooting sent bullets onto the porch where the teens were socializing. Dobson was shot multiple times and succumbed to his wounds, according to NBC.
"This is a fine, fine young man who is a success story," Dobson’s football coach Rob Black told CNN. "And I want to try to continue to celebrate the life that he had here and the impact that he made on his peers.”
The motivation of the shooting is unclear, but investigators tell the Washington Post that Dobson was unknown to the killers. They suspect that the shooting was a misplaced gang-related retribution
Obama mentioned Zaevion Dobson on Twitter following the attack, weeks ahead of his Tuesday speech. The President announced a number of executive actions aimed at tightening gun laws, particularly loopholes to avoid background checks: delays in federal processing (the government has only 3 days to complete the check), gun show sales, and online vendors.
