It has been more than 20 years since Princess Diana died in a fatal accident in 1997, but Prince William and Prince Harry can still vividly recall the last phone call they had with her just a few hours before her death. Two years ago, the brothers revealed the details of their final conversation with their mother and admitted that it still haunts them to this day.

According to Prince William, their final words with Princess Diana were exchanged in a brief phone call they had with her on the day she died. Prince William recounted that he, Prince Harry and their cousins were all having a good time at Queen Elizabeth’s private home in Balmoral when Princess Diana gave them a ring that fateful day. He, 15 at the time, was the first to talk to his mom.

“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, ‘see you later,’” he said. “If I’d known now obviously what was going to happen I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it and everything else. But that phone call sticks in my mind, quite heavily,” he added.

As for Prince Harry, he considers that phone call as one of his biggest regrets in life. “It was her speaking from Paris, I can’t really necessarily remember what I said but all I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short that phone call was,” he said.

According to Prince Harry, he often still looks back on that phone call today, and it’s still as incredibly hard for him as the first time. “I’ll have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life,” he said. “Not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak to my mum, how differently that conversation would have panned out if I’d even had the slightest inkling her life was going to be taken that night,” he said.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry still remember the moments they shared with their mother before she and Prince Charles divorced. Describing Princess Diana as “the best mother ever,” they said that the late Princess of Wales was the type who could bring a breath of fresh air to everything she did.
