A 15-year-old Indian boy killed himself allegedly after his mother failed to find time to buy him a new school uniform. The teen reportedly left behind a suicide note in which he said he was giving his mother the "best gift" on her birthday, police said.

The teenager, who has not been publicly identified, hanged himself in his house in Behror, Rajasthan after his mother, a government teacher, left for work on Friday, July 15.

Neighbours said the 10th grader was asking his mother to buy him a new uniform but the working mother was not able to manage time to take her son shopping.

When the teen reminded his mother about the uniform on Friday morning, she reportedly scolded him as she was getting late for school, police said as reported by The Indian Express.

The teen was upset over his mother’s response and decided to take the extreme step as a birthday gift to her.

"Now you will never be late for school. The best gift in the world. Happy Birthday, Mummy Ji," the boy purportedly wrote in a register before taking his life.

When the mother returned home from work, she found the doors locked from the inside.

When no one answered the door even after repeated knocks, she sought the help of the neighbours, who broke open the door and found the boy hanging dead from a ceiling fan in the bedroom.

"The mother is not in a state to say anything, therefore we have not talked to her so far. It is what the neighbours are telling us," SHO Behror police station Virendra said on Saturday.

"The woman’s husband died 3-4 years ago. Following her husband’s death, she got an appointment as a teacher in a government school in Bhagwadi Khurd on compassionate grounds. Her elder daughter lives with her maternal uncle and studies in class 12 while the son lived with her," the SHO said.

The teen’s body was handed over to his family members after an autopsy on Friday.
