The death of a 2-year-old girl in a Mexican community came as a shock to its residents after the child accidentally ingested a poison-laced cookie allegedly thrown by a neighbor into her family’s backyard at their home near Guadalajara. The said confection was meant to silence their noisy dog last week.

The toddler, Heidy Valeria, immediately felt unwell after eating the poison-laced treat, prompting her mother to call for help and take the child to the Municipal Civil Protection Unit, Yahoo! News reported.

“Unfortunately, the prompt action of Civil Protection at the time was not enough,” Mayor Juan Carlos Vázquez Coyul told the local media.

Heidy stopped breathing twice following respiratory attacks as paramedics performed life-saving measures before they rushed her to the hospital. The child would, however, succumb to her condition two days later on Feb. 3, according to The Sun.

Council General Secretary Epigmenio Carrillo said that the cause of little Heidy's poisoning is yet to be confirmed. Accordingly, he noted that the dog and a six-year-old girl, who was reportedly playing with the youngster at the time of the incident, both suffered similar medical issues. It remains unknown if the cases are connected.

Meanwhile, further announcements will be made as soon as the facts of the case have been established, Carrillo added.

"The truth is, the news has shocked the whole town. In fact, social media erupted when it became known what had happened,” a neighbor of the Tototlan family said.

Meanwhile, other Jalisco residents have been accusing a disgruntled neighbor of mistakenly poisoning little Heidy while trying to target the family's dog, which reportedly barked a lot.

Mexican activist and influencer Arturo Islas Allende would also air his concerns regarding the incident, saying, "We lost Valeria, we lost a two-year-old girl, because of some unscrupulous characters who threw poisoned cookies in Tototlan, Jalisco.”

He would then call for the swift arrest of any guilty parties, noting “those guys should be in jail” per the New York Post.

Heidy’s grieving family has since been offered support from local law enforcement as investigations into the little girl’s death continue.
