A 4-year-old Scottish girl was savagely mauled by a dog that left her needing 60 stitches to her face.

Harley Chatterton was at her granmother's friend's communal garden in Baillieston in Glasgow, playing with the one-year-old Jack Russell Lab mix, also known as a Jackador, when the canine attacked her at around 4.30 pm on May 14.

The little girl suffered 13 injuries to her face, including deep lacerations on her nose, mouth and lip. She might now be scarred for life, according to reports.

"When I saw my little girl's face I was heartbroken," her mom, Caprice Finlay said.

"She was in so much pain and wouldn't let anyone near her. She was crying hysterically."

"Only time will tell if the scars will disappear."

"The surgeon gave us scarring cream, but said they could be there forever."

"All I had been told was that Harley had been attacked by a dog. I didn't know where or how bad it was. Me and Stephen got there quickly after it happened."

The little girl’s grandmother witnessed the attack and attempted to free the child from the dog's grip as she screamed out in pain.

"The first thing I saw was my mum covered in blood," Caprice said.

"I was horrified, I knew it must have been serious."

Emergency services were called to the scene and the child was immediately rushed to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow where she underwent plastic surgery to try to repair the deep injuries.

The two-hour-long surgery left her with 60 stitches in 13 different spots on her face, and she wasn't able to eat for two days because of a swollen lip.

"She was in agony and couldn't eat or drink. It was so hard to watch because we couldn't make her better," Caprice said.

"After she saw herself in the mirror, she kept asking why the dog did this to her - my heart was broken for her."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the dog has been seized and that a "21-year-old woman was released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date".
