A 52-year-old man said to be behind the death of a 71-year-old woman in the Chakan area was apprehended by local authorities thanks to the help of a police dog named Jack. The arrest was made within four to five hours after the body of the woman was found on Monday.

The man was identified as Anil Sudam Waghmare, said to be a resident of Kurkundi village of Khed taluka of Pune. The woman lived in the same village and was discovered in a pool of blood on Monday. The incident allegedly took place between 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.

When authorities got word of the crime, police rushed to the scene of the crime. Officials of the forensic team thoroughly inspected the spot and were able to trace the incident to Waghmare. An official police report reveals that the victim had resisted the sexual assault, leading to the man hitting her with an iron blower that seriously injured and killed the 71-year-old woman.

“He forcefully entered her house and tried to rape her. When she resisted, he hit her in the head with a metal pipe used to fan the flame of an earthen stove to grievously hurt her and kill her. After her death he sexually assaulted her according to the investigation in the matter,” a statement from Manchak Ipper, deputy commissioner of police, Zone-1 of Pimpri-Chinchwad police read.

The complaint was lodged by the 50-year-old daughter-in-law of the deceased. The case is still under investigation as of this writing. If found guilty, Waghmare is staring at a case under Sections 376 (sexual assault), 302 (murder) and 450 (house-trespass to commit an offense punishable with imprisonment for life) of the Indian Penal Code.

“A judicial magistrate court has remanded the accused to four days of police custody. Further investigation is going on”, Inspector Anil Devade said.
