Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith was reportedly arrested on Wednesday by Texas A&M University Police and charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana less than two ounces.

Smith was initially pulled over for speeding on University Drive after 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday. After he failed to pass a standard sobriety test, Smith was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Smith also consented to a voluntary breathalyzer test at the time, which twice showed he was below the legal limit of .08, registering .066 and .061.

During the search inside his car, officers also found a "rolled joint of marijuana" and a gun with a "full magazine and a round chambered." Smith and a passenger both firmly denied ownership of the recovered items. Smith was charged with possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated. He was also charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon while engaged in criminal activity.

Smith was reportedly suspended from the football team as per athletic department policy following his arrest, as said by the team's spokesman. The team's head coach Jimbo Fisher was also aware of the situation and is currently looking into the matter.

According to jail records, the 21-year-old wide receiver posted his $8,000 bail; he was released from the Brazos County Detention Center on Wednesday. On behalf of the team, Smith was set to attend SEC Media Days on Thursday in Atlanta with Fisher and two other players.

Smith is the second Texas A&M receiver to be arrested this year. In March, Demond Demas was arrested for assault and family violence before being kicked out from the team. Demas’ girlfriend alleged that he "pushed her head into a wall" and threw her off a bed after she bit him in the shoulder.

Smith was a team captain for the Aggies last season. He led the Aggies in both receptions and touchdown catches. Smith also assisted his team with six touchdown receptions on 47 catches and finished the year with 509 receiving yards. He has also played in 21 games over the past three seasons, with 15 touchdowns and 1,321 yards through the air and also four touchdowns and 373 yards on the ground.
