"American Horror Story: Freak Show" continues tonight on FX with the fourth episode of Season 4, "Edward Mordrake Pt. 2." FX

The Season 4 premiere of “American Horror Story” is quickly approaching and with all the recent spoiler releases, fans are learning even more about the “Freak Show” universe. The FX miniseries, which is notable for its sickly sweet teaser trailers, and outright terrifying plot lines has teased fans even more by giving them an exclusive sneak peek at the opening credits for this forthcoming season. While each season of the series has a different theme, some things stay consistent, in addition to the legendary Jessica Lange who has been featured prominently in all four seasons, from “Murder House,” to “Asylum,” “Coven” and now finally “Freak Show,” another “American Horror Story” fixture is it’s opening credits song.

The opening credits and title sequence are just as important to the overall show as the plot, characters and setting, mainly due to the downright terrifying song’s ability to set the mood each week on Wednesday’s at 10 p.m. Now when that first note is heard, fans now what they are watching and prepare to be truly horrified. The opening credits for the series are created by Kyle Cooper and his aptly named company Prologue, despite his recognition for his work with “AHS,” Cooper is also responsible for the opening credits of another thrilling series, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” which like “AHS” will be debuting a new season this October.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, show runner Ryan Murphy revealed that the opening credits are intricately constructed and provide fans clues as to how the season will progress. “The title sequence is almost like a mystery,” says Murphy. “By the time you see the ninth episode of this season, every image in that title sequence will be explained. So for example, what are the jars in the basement? What is the mystery of the floating white Christening dress? Why is somebody holding hedge clippers that are bloody? Each time you watch it and you watch the week’s episode you’ll be able to say, ‘Oh that’s why that’s in there!'”

In addition to the carefully crafted title sequence, “AHS” has used the same song for each one, and thankfully for fans, they are not changing it up for Season 4’s “Freak Show.” The music is an original song called “American Horror Story” and was created by sound designer Cesar Davila-Irizarry and musician Charlie Clouser, formerly of the popular band Nine Inch Nails. The main difference with this season’s main title is that instead of real life characters and pictures of the setting and location, these are cartoon made images, it is animated, making it all the more intriguing! Check out the opening credits for Season 4 of “American Horror Story” and let us know what clues you find for “Freak Show!”
