Tyrion Lannister
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Season 4 of "Game of Thrones." HBO

Nominations for the 66th Annual Primetime Emmys were announced today, and it’s a good day to be HBO. The network is leading the number of nominations with it’s most watched series “Game of Thrones” at 19, with FX’s new series “Fargo” following closely behind with 18 Emmy nods, then “American Horror Story: Coven” is another FX series with 17 nominations. Despite the finale of the series, “Breaking Bad” is still set to be in the winner’s column at the Emmys with 16 nominations for it’s final fifth season, the same number that HBO’s “The Normal Heart” earned.

And while the front-runners were not so surprising there were a few shocks within the nominations. In keeping their reign strong, HBO made a risky decision by submitting “True Detective” within the “Drama” category as opposed to the predicted “Mini Series” category. While the series is a drama, however the second season is set to tell a new story, with an entirely new cast meaning that it is structured more like a mini series, meaning that the submission was controversial. But the controversial paid off, with “True Detective” garnering a nod in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category. Another shock was the decline in number of nominations for Showtime’s series “Homeland,” in 2013 the CIA-drama series gained 13 nominations, cementing itself as a front runner in 2013, but now in 2014 “Homeland” only gained 4 nominations.

Last but finally not least, with a ton of first time Emmy-nominations occurring in 2014 may fans expected to see “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany get the nod she so thoroughly deserves, but alas the talented actress was snubbed yet again. And while our disappointment over Maslany’s lack of nomination is real it was good to see “Game of Thrones’” Lena Headey get acknowledged as well as Taylor Schilling of “Orange is the New Black.” Check out the full list of nominations below!
