Angelina Jolie revealed her plan to move abroad with her children in the future. The “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” star explained, however, how Brad Pitt is preventing her from doing so.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced their split in 2016 but their divorce has yet to be finalized. Although Jolie used to be a private celebrity, her personal life has become subject to intense media scrutiny since he hooked up with Brad Pitt in 2005.

In a recent interview, Jolie revealed that she wanted to move out of the United States when their children come of age. Unfortunately, her complicated custody arrangement with Pitt makes it almost impossible for her to make it happen.

“I would love to live abroad and will do so as my children turn 18,” Angelina said. “Right now I’m having to base where their father chooses to live,” she added.

Jolie said that despite her desire to let her children explore the world, she just could not. The actress revealed that she would not like to give Pitt joint custody of their children, but she would have to allow her ex-husband to visit their children from time to time because that is their current custody arrangement.

A source close to Jolie also said, in a separate interview, that Jolie has been doing as the court has instructed, but their custody arrangement is still an ongoing point of contention. “They have a complicated arrangement at present, but she has primary custody with Brad getting tons of visitation as instructed by a judge the last time they went to court,” said the source.

According to California Family Law Attorney David T. Pisarra, Jolie could not stop Pitt from sharing joint custody with her. While she, currently, enjoys sole custody of their children, the court could still reverse the initial ruling and allow Pitt joint custody unless they see that the actor is an unfit parent. The court would reportedly not grant Jolie sole custody if there were no evidence of child abuse by Brad Pitt, which is still in question.
