If you are among the million others who are divided on what watch to buy next, here’s what you need to know—Apple watches are ruling the roost. But, Swiss watches are still perceived as a coveted purchase despite being outsold by the former.

While Apple Watch Series 5 might be a clear winner among a younger demographic; Swiss watches are known to appeal more to senior citizens, as these iconic watches personified “luxury, position, and affluence”. But, young adults today are on the lookout for devices that are in sync with their lifestyle that largely revolves around fitness, tech, and fashion. “People have embraced the Apple Watch as a solution that brings tech and fashion together,” said Carolina Milanesi, a tech analyst at research firm Creative Strategies, in a media report.

This holds true to a large extent, as the Apple watch helps track fitness levels on a timely basis and enables faster check-ins. What needs to be noted is that the Apple watch has risen as a status symbol—and offers a competitive alternative to its Swiss counterparts in the mid-range. The need to use a smartwatch for technological and health reasons seems like a more ideal option as compared to a “timeless masterpiece”.

While Apple watches outsold the Swiss watch industry in 2019, it’s not really the end for the era of Swiss. In fact, one of the biggest benefits that Swiss watches have always positioned itself as a status symbol owing to its luxury pricing and iconic and vintage designs to choose from. That aside, considering how boosting the battery life and technology upgrades are crucial for Apple watches; Swiss watches might seem like a more viable option if you don’t wish to replace your devices more frequently.

Reiterating the same, Ramon Llamas, research director at market research firm IDC, maintained that Swiss watches enjoy a repute that pales in comparison to any new age device for that matter. “Does this spell the end of Swiss watches? I doubt it,” he said. “There will still be interest and demand, and in fact, a number of younger users still aspire to own one someday,” he said, “Meanwhile, today's smartwatches — and yes, even the Apple Watch — will look quaint in just a matter of years,” he added.
