Humiliating day for former Bundesliga powerhouses Werder Bremen, after Bayern Munich won 7-0 on Saturday, extended their unbeaten run to 40 games. It was the first time in more than half a century that Bayern had struck seven times at Bremen's Weser stadium, once a fortress when the two sides battled for Bundesliga domination up until a decade ago. Bayern opened the scoring 21 minutes into the game after an own goal from Assani Lukimya-Mulongoti. After that little mistake from Bremen, it seemed like the whole world crumbled for them, and their spirits shifted, taking a toll on their performance.
It only took six more minutes until Daniel van Buyten scored Bayern's second goal, with Franck Ribery achieving the third one right before half-time, giving them their biggest half-time advantage of the season so far. Mario Mandzukic made it four before Thomas Muller put Bayern 5-0 ahead. Ribery added a sixth before Mario Gotze completed the rout to help assert Bayern's authority on the Bundesliga once again. Ribery was the hero of the match, after being back in the line-up for the first time since suffering a rib injury in his country's (France) World Cup play-off win over Ukraine last month.
"I am back," Ribery told reporters after the game. "I am glad that I managed a game. It was great to be back from the start on the pitch. The pain in the rib is as good as gone, so I could play freely." Ribery admitted afterwards that he cannot believe his good fortune and that he is getting to play in such a powerful and exciting side. "It was another good game by the team," he said. "With this team, it's just great fun, but we must continue to play as well against [Manchester] City on Tuesday."
