A volley of Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers recently encountered a bittersweet experience—having received a request to rescue a bear that got itself trapped inside the backseat of a car in Douglas County, Colorado on Tuesday.

"He was just doing what they do, which is just kind of pinballing around in there, trying to figure his way out," District Wildlife Manager Casey Westbrook told the station, as reported by Fox News. Fortunately, the angst didn’t last long as a Westbrook officer and Douglas sheriff’s deputy managed to arrive just in time before an emergency broke out, and released the fluffy mammal from the vehicle by tying a rope to the door handle (opening it and backing away). The report maintains that the bear made its way inside of the unlocked car, but couldn’t figure a way out.

The report further alleges that the bear also shredded part of a door and the ceiling of the car. “They’re just looking for an escape route so once that door opened he was looking for the nearest way out of there with no people,” said Westbrook.

While officers are yet to unravel the actual reason behind the bear trap—which lasted for almost about an hour— a fleeting assumption is that the beer in the back seat could’ve been the lure! The report further alleges that the bear made its way inside of the unlocked car, but couldn’t figure a way out. On a more serious note, none of the cans appeared to have been opened.

Car break-ins are becoming commonplace in Colorado, much o the concern of car owners. Cops have advised people against leaving food and beverages in the car. Over 500 car-break-ins by bears were reported between 2019 and 2020 in the state. These furry, unwelcome visitors are often attracted to vehicles that seem stuffed—with goodies, or objects that catch their fancy (which are often edible).

“Unfortunately, these photos serve as a reminder that if you are in bear country, you need to lock your car doors & keep it clean of all attractants,” shared CPW, as reported by Fox 31.
