Police gather evidence from the Oct. shooting in Washington D.C Reuters

On Wednesday afternoon around 1:15pm ET four people were wounded when a gunman opened fired into a crowd of people. The people were standing at a bus stop outside a Payless shoe store on the 3900 block of NE Minnesota Ave. Once the D.C. police and EMS arrived on the scene, the four injured people were taken to neighboring hospitals. Speaking with NBC News in Washington, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said it was unusual for a shooting to take place on Minnesota Avenue, let alone in broad daylight.

The four people hurt today, three men and one woman, were all conscience and breathing when they were taken to the hospital. Two people wounded this afternoon are in serious but stable condition. The other two people have been treated for non-life threatening injuries. The injured woman, who is in her sixties was shot in the knee. One witness said she heard gun shots and saw people running. There is no known motive for today's shooting. Police have several people in custody but there have been no arrests made.

Police believe the shooting was not random. This is the third shooting in Washington D.C since September. On September 16, a gunman and former Navy reservist opened fired at a Washington D.C. Navy yard killing 12 people. The lone gunman Aaron Alexis began his shooting spree shortly after 8am on the morning of the sixteenth. The gunman shot up a civilian office building located in the Navy yard. After arriving on the scene police became involved in an altercation with Alexis. Police shot and killed Alexis, one officer was injured during the fire fight.

In October a woman was shot by police outside the U.S. Capitol building. Miriam Carey a mother of one led D.C. police on a wild chase through the streets after trying to ram a gate at the White House. The chase ended near the steps of Capitol Hill where she was shot and killed by police. Following the shooting police discovered Carey's daughter hiding in the back seat of her car. It was later discovered that Carey was having mental health issues and believed she was being stalked by President Obama.
