"Despicable Me 2" was a huge success at the box office this weekend taking the number one spot away from Johnny Depp and Disney's "The Lone Ranger." The heartwarming family comedy stars Steve Carell as Gru the super villain turned loving father.

In this sequel to the 2010 smash "Despicable Me" Gru is kidnapped by an agent working for the Anti-Villain league. The league needs Gru's help to track down a mysterious mad man bent on world domination. Gru eventually agrees to help the league track down the man who stole a dangerous chemical compound by using a magnet.

During the first weekend "Despicable Me 2" was opened it earned $82.5 Million. During the five day-holiday weekend the Universal Pictures production grossed $142.1 Million.

Fans of "Despicable Me" will not have to wait long for the third installment of the franchise. Next year Gru's loveable, yellow sidekicks will get their own spinoff "Despicable Minions."

Said to be released in December 2014 "Despicable Minions" will feature the voice talents of Jon Hamm and Sandra Bullock. The actors will voice super villains who hire three of the "Despicable Me" minions in need of employment.

According to the official synopsis issued by Universal Studios "Despicable Minions" is an origin story that will showcase the unpredictable personalities of the minions, who have existed since the beginning of time and evolved the same way people have.
