A man has been handed a 16-week prison term for reportedly paying £200 to have the ears of three puppies cut.

The man was identified as Warren Wesley Jackman from Birmingham. The 40-year-old was caught after an RSPCA inspector, Vicki Taylor, found the three puppies bleeding with stitches in their ears during a visit to the home of the accused in Redditch Road, Birmingham in August, Birmingham Live reported.

The said procedure is done using razor blades with no anesthetic. It is considered illegal in the UK under the Animal Welfare Act unless it is carried out for medical reasons.

“The puppies’ ears were freshly cropped and had not yet healed; they still had stitches in the wounds. The male pups’ ears were inflamed and sore,” Taylor stated. “We interviewed the man who claimed to have bred the puppies before selling them to Jackman and provided us with bills of sale. He told us that Jackman had cropped their ears.”

When the inspector talked to Jackman, the 40-year-old admitted paying to have the ears of the dogs cropped.

"When I spoke to Jackman he admitted that he’d paid £200 for them to have their ears cropped,” Taylor quipped.

The dogs, a female bully XL named Mika and two three-month-old puppies named Zushi and Zino, were reportedly seized by authorities. The 40-year-old man admitted two offenses under the Animal Welfare Act when he appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on June 13.

Aside from being handed a prison term, Jackman was also banned from keeping animals for life. The three puppies are now being rehomed by the RSPCA.

Cropping kits were previously available on sites such as Etsy and eBay. They have since been removed after it sparked outrage from vets and campaigners.
