A famous Tejano singer has former an exploratory bid to potentially launch a congressional bid in Southern Texas as a Democrat.
The Texas Tribune reported on Thursday that Bobby Pulido could challenge Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz, who represents Edinburg.
Pulido, who was born in Edinburg, is set to retire from making music 30 years after releasing his debut album and will decide whether to delve into politics later this year.
The outlet added that De La Cruz is the only Texas Republican who Democrats will target in next year's midterm elections. However, the 15th district's boundaries could change soon as the Greg Abbott administration conducts an overtime special session where lines could be redrawn to capture more seats currently held by Democrats.
"Texas will be the biggest one. And that'll be five," Trump said after he was asked about the possibility of adding GOP-friendly districts around the country.
Speaking to the outlet, Pulido said he believes he could help depolarize the electorate, which has shifted to the Republican party in recent elections.
"I'm proud to be from the Rio Grande Valley" and "I'm proud to say that in the RGV, people vote for the person, not the party," Pulido said. He went on to claim that Democrats could improve their standing by focus on economic issues.
"The further left we run on certain things, certain Latino voters are not in agreement with it — that's just a fact," he explained. "But I still believe that as a Democratic Party, we're a big tent, and we'll accept all kinds of people. I also think that you can have the right messengers."
De La Cruz reacted to the possibility, saying "our children's future is no song and dance." "While others are busy testing the waters, I'm out there delivering them — literally," she added, a reference to the deal with Mexico to release water into the region.
