A Scottish grandmother, who has been living on a farm for the past 40 years, reportedly won a brand-new BMW X2 and a life-changing cash prize of US$40,432 (£30,000) from a National Lottery scratch card.

The winner, identified as Hannah Dewar, 79, known to her community as "Val," was at a dental clinic when she decided to buy a couple of scratch cards. After buying the tickets, she decided to go back home and scratch the stubs at the farmhouse she lives in.

On Dec. 22, after Val scratched one side of one of the cards and thought that she hadn’t won anything, she almost threw the stub into a fire. However, she noticed that she had missed the other side of the ticket. After scratching the reverse side, she realized that she had won a US$40,432 prize (£30,000) and a brand-new BMW X2 car, the Scotsman reported.

Val has been living on a farm in the area for over four decades. Following the win, she spent Christmas with her daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandchildren and ordered a luxury dinner from a local caterer.

Val’s brand new BMW will be delivered to her after the New Year. She reportedly has already decided that she wants her BMW to be white in color.

Despite winning the lottery, Val plans to continue buying National Lottery scratch cards each week.

“It’s part of my weekly routine. Since I gave up smoking in 2013 I have saved the money that I would have spent and used it to buy a few Scratchcards. It was obviously the right decision as it eventually brought me good luck,” she said.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a ticket that someone bought at a Forsyth County convenience store reportedly won a $1-million prize in the Mega Millions drawing, N.C Education Lottery stated.

The winning ticket was reportedly bought at the Circle K on Williams Road in Lewisville. The winners have around 180 days from the drawing to claim their prize, Winston-Salem Journal reported.

In another incident, the Virginia lottery announced that two New Year's Millionaire Raffle tickets bought at Virginia Beach and Cedar Road are now worth $1 million each.

One winning ticket was bought at the Harris Teeter located at 2800 Arctic Avenue in Virginia Beach. Meanwhile, the other winning ticket was bought at the Cedar Mart located at 1229 Cedar Road in Chesapeake, WTKR reported.

Meanwhile, one Millionaire Raffle ticket bought in Alexandria and another ticket bought in Stuarts Draft, are also $1 million winners.
