Spain's Princess Cristina appeared in court on Monday with husband Iñaki Urdangarin after she was accused with tax evasion while her husband is charged with other crimes such as embezzlement, document falsification, influence peddling, money laundering and tax fraud. Both deny the charges against them. The case revolves around business dealings by the Noos Institute, a charitable institution based in Palma which Urdangarin founded and chaired from 2004 to 2006.

According to Reuters, Cristina arrived with her husband at the Mallorcan court to be greeted by TV and press cameras. She sat motionless in the court room while the accusations were read out. Her defense asked judges to drop the criminal charges against her as state prosecutors had previously said there was not enough evidence to support the accusations.

Spain’s King Felipe stripped her Duchess of Palma title last year. She's the first member of the royal family to face criminal charges since the monarchy was restored in the 1970s. If found guilty of helping her husband, Cristina could faced eight years in jail.
