With “Game Of Thrones” Season 8 getting closer than ever, fans have doubled down on speculating about what's to come.

One of the things that keep coming up is the possibility of a contender for the Iron Throne, who may come out of nowhere and surprise everyone. Gendry has been the subject of such speculation after it has become clearer that the character will play a key role in Season 8 of “Game Of Thrones.” Many fans have always believed that he is every bit entitled to be king as the others are.

Joe Dempsie, the actor who plays the role, seems to be on board the idea. He admitted in a recent interview with Men's Health that while he isn't one for theories, this one could very well be close to the truth. The actor said that he is just as curious about the history of Gendry as fans are, specifically his parentage.

“There's a line in season one, and it's a first scene you ever see of Gendry, where he's looking to Ned and he's asked about his mother, and he says he doesn't remember much about her at all, other than the fact that she had yellow hair and she would sing to him,” he said.

“It's one of those things where you go, ‘Do they usually write lines that don't mean anything, or lines that seem to have significance that [are] never addressed again?’ I was kind of intrigued to see what that might mean, and what impact that might have on Gendry's clout politically,” he added.

His greater involvement in “Game Of Thrones” Season 8 might just mean that the blacksmith may be able to attain power after all.

While this might be a long shot considering the other contenders in the running, it is not totally impossible. In fact, it is the kind of twist that would feel right at home — one that's expected but still catches fans off guard.

HBO doesn't want viewers to think about that possibility at all, though. Gendry didn't have a picture of himself sitting on the Iron Throne in the new promo images for the series.

Having a photo of him may just be a bit too revealing. Then again, people have been fans of the show long enough to prepare for the possibility that it will pull the rug under them. However, a more likely scenario that would explain Gendry's extended role in “Game Of Thrones” Season 8 is to pave the way for another character arc — Cersei’s.

It is speculated that Gendry's long-time absence on the show might be her doing. Fans can say what they will about her, but Cersei does love her kids. Now people are considering that she may have sent the blacksmith away to save him from King Joffrey’s deadly tyranny.

Whatever Gendry's return means, it surely has viewers even more excited about how things will pan out. Will he ever discover his true place in the complicated Westeros hierarchy? Fans would know soon enough with “Game Of Thrones” Season 8 premiering April 14.
