Goth Barbie, usually two words one would never put together in a sentence. The popular toy maker Mattel has launched a new line of Barbie Dolls inspired by classic monster movies. The "Monsters High" Barbie Dolls are dressed up in fishnets and dark clothing while sporting Vans and pale "undead" skin.

The "Monsters High" doll collection was originally launched in 2010. In just three years the dolls' popularity has soared. The sale of the monster themed dolls has risen 56 percent this year. That number will most likely rise in upcoming months, when the holiday season comes around.

The "Monsters High" dolls are aimed for girls between the ages of six and 12 and expresses the message girls should be themselves. Each of the Goth Barbie dolls has their own monstrous name and individual character quirks to go along with them.

Some of the "Monsters High" characters include the daughter of Dracula, a vampire named Draculaura. Lagoona Blue, a sea monster's kid. The werewolf's daughter is also a part of the group, Clawdeen Wolf admits in her character bio shaving her legs is a full time job.

There are some critics who say the dolls advocate the exact opposite message of individualism they are said to promote. Callie Beusman of Jezebel says the dolls still show young girls their ideal image should be thin, boy crazy teens "with the features of a character from 'Pretty Little Liars.'"

"If the purported goal of the toy is to teach girls the value of self-acceptance, this really isn't cutting it," Beusman writes. "In the first place, 'hairy legs' or 'dry skin' are far from the most pressing 'freaky flaw' that a youth can face. These character bios serve to reinforce the feminine imperative to be hairless, made up, and moisturized. To market the brand as a celebration of flaws is ridiculously specious."

The "Monsters High" franchise is comprised of more than just dolls. There is a ton of merchandise, like key chains and clothes. Girls can also play an interactive online game featuring the Goth Barbie Dolls. There is also a YouTube channel with web episodes featuring the Monsters High characters.

The success of the Goth Barbie came as a surprise to the Mattel Company. Vice President of Design at Mattel Kiyomi Haverly told NPR,

"Honestly, it was very surprising to us. We just noticed girls were into darker Goth fashion."
