Ghost hunters in Halifax, Nova Scotia will be spending the evening of Halloween 2013 trying to contact the ghost of legendary magician Harry Houdini. Harry Houdini was born Ehrich Weisz and became famous for his tricks, illusions and tempting of the supernatural. Houdini died on October 31, 1926 after a ruptured appendix caused peritonitis. Houdini was in his dressing room when two students walked in. One of the students was curious about the magician's boast he could withstand any blow to the abdomen. Houdini said he could withstand the blow if he were given the opportunity to brace himself.
The student took that to mean Houdini was prepared for the four sharp blows he would deliver to his abdomen. Houdini was not prepared and the blows would result in extreme pain, fever and appendicitis. Houdini would refuse medical treatment for two days and by the time his appendix was removed the doctors believed the magician would not survive. With his wife and brother at his side, Houdini died Halloween night and was later buried in Queens, New York. Before Houdini died he told his wife that if it were possible he would send her a message from the afterlife.
Houdini died 87 years ago and since then there has been a séance on Halloween night somewhere in the world, attempting to contact his spirit. This year's live séance will be held in Halifax where the Magician spent a month and performed his first jail break illusion. Bruce MacNab, a long-time fan and follower of Houdini, spoke with cbc.ca about Halifax playing host to the attempt to contact Houdini. MacNab feels the location is appropriate because "another notable event for Houdini was his performance in Dartmouth, was actually his first performance outside of the United States as a headliner."
Before the séance begins there will be performances by famed magicians celebrating Houdini's life and influence. The séance itself will be led by psychic and spiritual medium Alan Hatfield. The medium will use special voice recording equipment to try and catch Harry Houdini if he actually makes contact from the spirit world. The medium told UPI.com that "My specialty is EVP -- electronic voice phenomena. I've been to the Titanic site twice and recorded voices there and at Deadman's Island and other places throughout the years."
