Prince Charles reportedly incensed Prince Philip after he committed one of the huge mistakes of his life. The incident took place after Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated.

In Penny Junor’s book “The Firm,” the royal biographer talked about the heir to the throne’s interview with broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby. At that time, the reporter asked Prince Charles if he had always been faithful to the Princess of Wales.

The dad of two initially told the broadcaster that he had always been faithful to his wife. However, things changed after he realized that their marriage could no longer be saved.

Prince Charles’ controversial and shocking response reportedly made his father furious. “The Duke of Edinburgh was incensed, the rest of the family flabbergasted, and the Queen’s advisers and courtiers stunned, the Prince’s friends appalled,” Junor said.

“Many regarded [that] as the worst mistake of his life. At the time many people thought it might cost him the throne,” Junor added. Following Prince Charles’ interview, Princess Diana also decided to give her side of the story during a secret interview.

The late royal reportedly invited cameras to be brought into Kensington Palace without the knowledge of the other royals. She told Panorama’s Martin Bashir that there were three of them in her marriage. Princess Diana was obviously referring to Prince Charles’ mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Bashir also talked about Prince Charles’ future role as king. The reporter asked Princess Diana what she thought about her husband’s position, and she said that she didn’t think he is suited to be the next monarch.

Princess Diana’s statement did not sit well with the royal family either. Queen Elizabeth reportedly became furious after hearing what Princess Diana said, and this led her to encourage the royal couple to finalize their divorce. One year after the interview, Prince Charles and Princess Diana went their separate ways for good.

But even though both parties contributed to the fallout of their marriage, royal expert Robert Lacey said that Prince Philip and Her Majesty put most of the blame on their son. “Prince Charles, of course, as we since discovered, was already committed emotionally to another woman,” he said.
