Prince Charles’ deeply dysfunctional life should encourage the public to be more sympathetic toward the future king. Additionally, the Prince of Wales also lived an isolated life as a young boy.

In the book “Prince Of Wales: A Biography” by Jonathan Dimbleby, it was revealed that the Duke of Cornwall was raised by a nursery staff, who taught him to play, witnessed his first steps, punished and rewarded him while his parents were on royal duty.

The YouTube documentary “The Madness Of Prince Charles” also heard from Peter Marsh, a professor in social psychology at the University of Oxford. He said that he should have sympathy for someone who appears to have grown up in a deeply dysfunctional family.

“And I think his upbringing and the remoteness of his parents for most of his life – the kind of life that goes on beyond the walls of Buckingham Palace,” he said. “I suppose I ought to feel some sorry for him growing up as a child,” he added.

Prince Charles did not grow up to be close to his parents because they were always not around. He also had a complicated relationship with his dad, Prince Philip. Whenever the Duke of Edinburgh is with his eldest son, he taught him how to fish and hunt.

However, the father-and-son duo’s time wasn’t always pleasant. Royal biographer Sally Bedel Smith said in the “Prince Charles: The Passions And Paradoxes Of An Improbable Life” that the Duke of Edinburgh oftentimes belittled his son due to Prince Philip’s forceful personality.

Prince Philip was overly concerned with the fact that Prince Charles appeared to be too soft, and he was worried that he would grow up to become vulnerable and weak. As a result, the Duke’s alpha-male tendencies were seen as bullying.

Meanwhile, even though Prince Charles felt isolated from his parents, he developed a close bond with his late grandmother, the Queen Mother. When she passed away in 2002, Prince Charles gave a heartwarming speech and said that his grandmother meant everything to him. “I had dreaded, dreaded this moment along with, I know, countless others,” Prince Charles said.
