Queen Elizabeth II previously defended her popularity during the so-called Princess Diana mania. Her Majesty revealed how well loved she was during their time.

In the book “The Firm,” royal expert Penny Junor said that the Princess of Wales’ popularity was phenomenal. However, it wasn’t the first time that royal fans have fallen in love with a member of the British clan. Several years ago, the Queen and Princess Margaret also managed to pack the streets with massive crowds during their royal outings.

“When the mania over Diana was at its height, one of the Queen’s courtiers said, ‘Ma’am, you will never have seen anything like the publicity Charles and Diana are having,’” Junor said. “‘You were not around,’ she said witheringly ,‘when Margaret and I were having our future husbands talent-spotted for us,’” the royal expert added.

The Queen went on to compare the width, breadth and depth of the media during her time with that of the Princess Diana mania, and she said that hers was just as great, if not greater. Her Majesty added that almost every day suitors lined up to meet her.

“I couldn’t argue,” Junor said. “People turned out in their thousands not just in Britain but in the courtiers she visited all over the world to see Princess Elizabeth and cheer her. Monarchy at that time was revered in a way that the youth of today would find incomprehensible.”

Meanwhile, talking about the Queen and Princess Diana, it can be said that the two had a complicated relationship. Before the Princess of Wales divorced Prince Charles, the former asked the Queen for help on how to save her marriage.

In the book “Diana: In Her Own Words,” royal author Andrew Morton spoke with the mom of two, who revealed that the Queen was less than sympathetic when she spoke to her. “I went to the top lady and said: ‘I don’t know what I should do,’” Princess Diana said.

“She said: ‘I don’t know what you should do.’ And that was it. That was ‘help,’” she added.
