In the book “The Duchess: The Untold Story,” royal correspondent Ross Benson recounted the time when the Princess of Wales announced at the last minute that she would attend the state banquet for President Mario Soares of Portugal at Buckingham Palace. At that time, Princess Diana was already banned from every royal occasion.

When Princess Diana phoned Her Majesty to let her know that she would attend the state banquet, the monarch couldn’t say no to her. Benson said that Her Majesty was fearful of Princess Diana because of the influence she had on Prince William and Prince Harry.

“And most of all frightened over the future which she senses belongs to Diana,” Benson said. “That is why the Queen shied away from telling Diana that she would be unwelcome at the State banquet. In effect, Diana had hijacked the royal family,” he added.

Princess Diana reportedly stood beside Prince Charles — the husband who detested her — at the state banquet. “The husband who for 11 years had been subjected to her temper and tantrums. She had outshone him, outmaneuvered him, and finally humiliated him,” Benson said.

Meanwhile, the Queen reportedly remarked to one of her household staff that Prince Charles and Prince Andrew took in two girls from broken homes who didn’t do them well. Prince Andrew was previously married to Sarah Ferguson.

In the book, it was revealed that Princess Diana focused more on her own happiness and well-being and not so much on the well-being of the institution. She reportedly chose to take a sledgehammer to the foundations of propriety on which the House of Windsor was built.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married for a total of 15 years. But 11 years into their marriage, the former couple announced that they would be going their separate ways.
