Prince William’s last conversation with Princess Diana did not just revolve around the two of them. Rather, the mom and son also talked about Prince Harry.

In Andrew Morton’s 2011 book “William And Catherine,” the royal author said that Prince William was worried about Prince Harry, and he shared his thoughts with the Princess of Wales. At that time, Princess Diana was vacationing in Paris with her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed.

“While Diana lay on a deck of a luxury yacht under the Mediterranean sun, William was concerned about an addict from Buckingham Palace that he had to attend a photocall to mark his third year at Eton,” Morton said. “It was part of what he considered a Faustian bargain made with the media — he would be left alone to continue his schooling in peace in return for occasional access,” he added.

During their phone conversation, Prince William also told Princess Diana that his younger brother had been kept back a year at Ludgrove. This means that the focus of the press would be on Prince Harry’s underachievement and not on Prince William’s steady academic progress.

Before hanging up, Princess Diana promised her eldest son that she would discuss the matter with Prince Charles the next day when she returns home. Unfortunately, Princess Diana never returned because she passed away in a car crash during her trip.

Prince Charles was informed shortly after the crash that Princess Diana had passed away. But instead of telling his sons the devastating news immediately, he decided to let them sleep through the night and told them the news the next morning.

According to Morton, Prince William had an inkling that something bad had happened because he kept waking up from his sleep the night before. The Duke of Cambridge was just 14 years old when his mom passed away, and Prince Harry was just 11 years old. Princess Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997.
