Colombian superstar Karol G surprised and excited her fans with a video promoting her new album Tropicoqueta, with telenovela legends Anahí, Azela Robinson, Gaby Spanic , Itatí Cantoral and Ninel Conde in a parody of some of the scenes from legendary soap operas such as Rebelde, María la del Barrio and La Usurpadora, blurring the line between the iconic genre of Latin American television and music.
However, she's not alone. Telemundo has done the same with its production "Velvet," in which Gloria Trevi appeared this week.
Although urban artists have previously expressed their love for telenovelas, including Bad Bunny, who mentioned Belinda and her production Cómplices al Rescate, this is the first time that a star of Karol G's magnitude has made a declaration of love and combined her work not only with telenovelas but also with such important actresses.
Cantoral, Conde, Spanic, and Anahí expressed their gratitude to La Bichota for bringing them on board. "Their people called me to propose it, and of course I said yes," said the Venezuelan actress, who reprised her role as Paola Bracho, the evil twin in La Usurpadora.
Anahí and Karol rolled on the floor pulling each other's hair, while Cantoral shouted her now classic "Damn cripple," the phrase from her character Zoraida Montenegro in María la del Barrio.
The video is filled with references to the soap operas the artist watched as a child and represents the heart of her new album, which also reflects the pop culture elements that shaped and informed her music and image. In fact, it even features a song with Marco Antonio Solis, "El Buki."
'Velvet' also erases lines
The Telemundo telenovela, inspired by the successful Spanish series, has also contributed to this fusion. Although other productions have featured cameos by music stars, 'Velvet, the New Empire' is doing so with an abundance of talent and opportunities.
New York artist Prince Royce appeared in the first episode. Then it was Puerto Ricans Alexis and Fido's turn, and now it's Mexican pop superstar Gloria Trevi.
"During an impromptu stop on her promotional tour for her new album , El Vuelo, Trevi visits Velvet's new fashion studio, captivating the series' stars, Yon González, Samantha Siqueiros, and Carolina Miranda," explains a statement from the artist.
