Major League Baseball team owners approved the Oakland Athletics' requested move to Las Vegas in a unanimous vote.

According to media reports, Las Vegas will now be home to two professional sports powerhouses that have abandoned California in recent years: the A's and the Raiders.

The Athletics are expected to play in a new venue on the Las Vegas Strip. The stadium is projected to cost some $1.9 billion, with $380 million committed by Nevadas's state government.

The A's have been part of the MBL's history with nine World Series won since 1901 when the team played in Philadelphia. In the 'City of Fraternal Love', the A's won five world series before moving to Kansas City. In 1968 the team relocated to Oakland, where it won four MLB pendants.

Las Vegas is already home to the Las Vegas Aviators (formerly the Las Vegas 51s), a minor leagues team in the MLB's Triple A West division affiliated with the Oakland Athletics.

The city has invested billions in its sports infrastructure and it's considered the world's capital of boxing and mixed martial arts as the UFC headquarters is based here.

In terms of global sports, Las Vegas is hosting its first Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday (Nov 19).
