A Latino journalist known for covering immigration raids in the state of Georgia has been arrested and could be deported, according to a new report.

The Associated Press detailed that Mario Guevara, who fled El Salvador almost two decades ago, was arrested last Saturday while streaming during a protest in DeKalb county.

Guevara can be heard telling an agent that he is a journalist before being arrested. He was also wearing a vest with the word press on the chest. Guevara has been charged with obstructing police, unlawful assembly and illegal entry to a highway, the outlet added. His lawyer, Giovanni Diaz, said a judge granted him bond on Monday but he has stayed under ICE custody for an additional two days nonetheless.

"He's not a legal permanent resident but is authorized to live and work in the U.S.," Diaz added in an interview with the AP. He added that the journalist has a son who is a U.S. citizen and has a pending request to get a green card.

The outlet noted that Guevara fled El Salvador along with his family in 2004 after being beat and threatened over his work as a political reported. In the U.S., he worked for the largest Spanish-speaking outlet, Mundo Hispanico, before launching his own outlet, MGNews.

"He's been doing this kind of work for over 20 years and is being detained now," Diaz added. "It's concerning. He's a member of the press and didn't seem to be committing any felonies," he added.
