New Line returns to craft the realms of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" installment, twenty years after its initial creation. This time, as an anime.

The announcement came Thursday that Warner Bros. has teamed up with its animation division to create an original anime set in Tolkien's fantasy universe, entitled, "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim." The animated movie will be developed by Sola Entertainment with voice casting ongoing. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film worldwide.

The stand-alone feature will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, an anime veteran who most recently helmed the TV series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,” and produced by Joseph Chou.

In addition to “Ghost in the Shell” film credits, the two have collaborated on some of the most popular anime titles, including “Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya,” “Ultraman,” and “Appleseed.”

“And so it begins.” Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation told media in a statement that, “This will be yet another epic portrayal of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world that has never been told before. We’re honored to partner with much of the incredible talent behind both film trilogies, along with new creative luminaries to tell this story.”

The movie will venture into the untold narrative of the castle of Helm's Deep in the original “The Lord of the Rings,” story, delving into the life of one of Middle-most earth's famous heroes, the powerful King of Rohan - Helm Hammerhand.

“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is being made as a companion piece to New Line's “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, with plot and aesthetic aspects woven throughout that will connect viewers to the excitement and cinematic magic of Middle-earth.

Carolyn Blackwood, Chief Operating Officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, and Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer of New Line Cinema, said in a joint statement, “All of us at New Line feel a deep affinity for the extraordinary world J.R.R. Tolkien created, so the opportunity to dive back into Middle-earth with the team at Warner Bros. Animation is a dream come true.”

“Fans know Helm’s Deep as the stage for one of the greatest battles ever put to film and, with many of the same creative visionaries involved and the brilliant Kenji Kamiyama at the helm, we couldn’t be more excited to deliver a fresh vision of its history that will invite global audiences to experience the rich, complex saga of Middle-earth in a thrilling new way,” the team added.

“The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” Trilogies from New Line Cinema are among the most profitable and celebrated film series of all time. The six films have received the most Academy Awards and nominations of any film series in history, including eleven Oscars for "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King," tying the record for a single film.
