The good news is that “Lucifer” Season 5 is already in the bag, but the bad news is that it might also be its last. Despite the show's popularity, a sixth season for the series is unlikely to happen.

Netflix has finally announced via social media that “Lucifer” has been renewed for Season 5. “Thanks to the lucifans, #lucifer's story will come to an end the way it should: the fifth and final season is coming to @netflix,” the streaming giant made the announcement via the show’s Instagram account.

Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich thanked the network for picking up the show after Fox canceled it. “We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” the showrunners said in a statement.

They also thanked the more than 300,000 fans who supported the show by mounting a huge online campaign to have it renewed for a Season 4. “Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support,” the showrunners added. “The best is yet to come.”

But many are wondering why the network would refuse to renew the show for a Season 6 when it’s been doing very well in terms of popularity. It has topped the weekly binge-list rankings for six weeks now. In fact, it is on track to beat “Game Of Thrones” to becoming 2019’s most successful series.

Even the members of the cast of “Lucifer” were just as shocked as the show’s fans. “The day they announced it to the public, we found out hours before that,” actor Kevin Alejandro, who plays Detective Dan Espinoza on the series, told Metro. “At first, you know, it’s kind of bittersweet, because originally we were just waiting to hear if we’d been picked up for another season, and so there’s that.”

The announcement also sparked another online petition seeking for the network to pick it up for a sixth season. At the moment, the campaign already garnered more than 50,000 signatures, including Lauren German, who plays Detective Chloe Decker onscreen.

Unfortunately, even showrunner Ildy Modrovich is not convinced that the ongoing #SaveLucifer campaign will change things. “Many are wondering if they should fight for more??” Modrovich wrote on Twitter. “And while we feel just as sad as many of you do that this marvelous ride is coming to an end, a fight won’t change things right now.”
