Emergency services attended the scene at Castle Hill Avenue, New York City after a man was run over by a subway train. The man was killed as he was sitting on the train tracks when the train approached the station. He was killed on the spot after being decapitated by the oncoming train. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

On Wednesday, June 30 an incident at Castle Hill Avenue subway station caused public disruption. As the northbound 6 train careened into the station it ran over a man who was on the train’s tracks.

Around 10:40 p.m. the unnamed man was fatally hit by the train. As the train ran over the man he was beheaded, the New York Post reported. The harrowing accident left the man’s body on the elevated tracks. His decapitated head fell off the tracks onto the street below.

Police, fire department and paramedics arrived at the spot once the accident was reported. Members of the public were prevented from approaching the scene as the police launched an investigation. The identity of the victim and the reason behind him being on the track as the train approached remains unknown. It is also not known why an alarm was not raised when the man was spotted on the tracks before the train approached.

The Daily Mail reported that New York Police Department acknowledged the incident.

A spokesperson for the police department said, “On June 30, 2021, at 2244hrs, police officers responded to Castle Hill Avenue and Westchester Avenue within the confines of the 43rd Precinct. Upon arrival, officers were informed that a male was sitting on the roadbed at the south end of the northbound train tracks at the location and was struck by the train. EMS responded and pronounced the male deceased on the scene. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.”

The Central Hill Avenue elevated subway line is a part of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) Pelham Line of the New York City Subway. The line is served by 6 trains at all times except the peak direction on weekdays.
