A man allegedly took his own life by consuming rat poison as he was depressed over not having a child in Kurla, Mumbai, India on Monday, July 18.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Mazhar Ali Ansari, was reportedly upset and sank into a deep depression over not having a child despite being married for five years. On Monday, July 18, Ansari allegedly consumed rat poison in order to kill himself, NDTV reported.

Ansari was subsequently found lying unconscious inside the bathroom of their residence in Kurla by his wife, who immediately alerted local law enforcement. Officers immediately responded to the scene and took Ansari to the nearby Lokmanya Tilak Hospital at Sion for immediate treatment. However, Ansari later succumbed to the poisoning and died at the health facility, the Free Press Journal reported.

“We admitted him to the hospital and he was alive till he started receiving treatment. But in the next couple minutes, he was declared dead,” said senior police inspector Anil Desai of Chunabhatti police station,

"He was under depression and used to frequently tell his near and dear ones that his life was incomplete without a child," the officer said.

Following the incident, the police returned to the victim's house and recorded the statement of his older brother, who told the police that the family does not suspect foul play.

The officers have filed an accidental death report (ADR) in connection with the incident and an investigation is underway.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a man who was left severely depressed after losing his job reportedly killed himself after murdering his 74-year-old mother in Nagpur, India, on Sunday, April 24, Latin Times reported.

The decomposing bodies of Shrinivas Vishnu Chopde, 54, and his 74-year-old mother Leela were found in their Hindustan Colony residence. A preliminary investigation revealed that Chopde slumped into a deep depression after losing his job and was under severe mental stress.

When Leela and Chopde failed to answer the family's calls for two days in a row, Chopde's younger sister requested her cousin Sagar Ingle to visit the house to check up on them. When Ingle subsequently reached the house, nobody answered the door. Soon after, a team of Dhantoli police officers responded to the scene, broke open the main door, and found Chopde's and Leela’s bodies lying in a decomposed state.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the officers indicates that Chopde killed his mother with a knife and later died by consuming poison sometime on Sunday, April 24.
