A 31-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife with an ax after accusing her of abetting his sister’s suicide. The man then attempted to end his life by consuming poison, police said.

The accused man, identified as Samir Tavare, a farmer from Mandavgan Farata in Shirur taluka, of Pune, India allegedly used an ax to hack his wife to death on Thursday, Nov.18, morning.

The victim has been identified as Vaishali Samir Tavare.

Earlier that day, Samir’s 32-year-old sister, Maya Satav was found dead inside a well near their home.

“It was a case of suicide,” Kamble said.

According to the police, after committing the crime, Samir tried to end his life by consuming poison. Neighbors rushed him to the hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

“He is in a critical condition and under treatment at a private hospital in Daund,” Assistant Inspector Sandip Kamble of the Shirur police told the Times of India.

The incident came to light after Vaishali’s brother, Kiran Gaikwad (31) of Ahmednagar district, filed a complaint against Samir accusing him of his sister’s murder.

Gaikwad said in his statement that “Vaishali had come to her paternal house in August, complaining about harassment by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. On November 14, he took Vaishali and their two children back home after resolving the issue.”

However, on Wednesday Vaishali and Maya got into a heated argument after which Maya stormed out of the house.

“Maya then went missing. The family searched her during the entire day,” Gaikwad said in his statement.

On Thursday morning, locals alerted the family after they found Maya’s lifeless body in a well near the house. No suicide note has been recovered, investigators said.

“Furious over this, Samir returned home and hacked Vaishali to death with an ax, while she was sleeping. He later consumed poison,” Kamble said.

Samir was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital, police said.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were revealed at the time of this writing.
