While advancement into the quarterfinal round of the 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League provided some joy to those involved with the Manchester United football club, continued struggles in league play have many wondering how much longer the Glazer family will stand firm in their support of first-year boss David Moyes. Following a 3-0 loss to rival Manchester City, ESPN FC reports that Moyes is facing a tumultuous situation with United board members and even certain players who are beginning to turn their backs on him. Prior to the Manchester Derby, the former Everton coach wrote a statement asking for continued support from the Red Devils faithful, but many are not sold that he’ll be at Old Trafford for the long haul.

“Our thoughts are well and truly on the future and our planning is already well under way, not just for next season, but for many seasons to come,” Moyes posted. “During Manchester United's long periods of dominance in the last two decades, which brought unparalleled success, many other clubs had to undergo periods of turnaround and they knew tough times when things were not going well for them. They looked to change lots of different managers and players, all the while trying to find ways of keeping up and competing with United.”

The loss at Old Trafford in the Manchester Derby was certainly a hard pill to swallow but add in the fact that United dropped their previous league contest to rival Liverpool and it should come as no surprise that unity within the organization is wavering. Numerous players are beginning to grow tired of the in-game tactics and training sessions Moyes implements and their unhappiness is beginning to show regularly on the pitch. With the dropped match to City, Man U suffered their sixth home defeat, something that hasn’t happened at Old Trafford since 1978 and an occurrence that forward Wayne Rooney says is unacceptable.

“I don’t know why, but it’s not good enough,” he said about his side’s recent effort in Premier League play. “We can’t lose six homes games in a season and we have to put that right and make this a place which teams fear again. It’s probably been the story of our season so far that we’ve got a couple of good results and then one which sets us back a bit. We know we have to respond. Tuesday [against City] was a bad night for us all but we have to move on. We’ve got two big games coming up against Bayern Munich but first we have to focus on the Aston Villa game and try to end the season on a positive note.”

Ending the season in strong fashion could be the only thing that saves David Moyes’ job. With crucial contests coming up against Villa, Bayern Munich (UCL) and Newcastle, the Red Devils will surely need to play with more intensity if they’re to soften the blow of a dreadful campaign.
