The New York Yankees decided to place their star first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring strain. He strained his hamstring while fielding a foul ball in yesterday’s game. The Yankees have been flooded with injuries in the past few seasons and they were hoping this season wouldn’t be the same. Let’s hope this season is not the same. Not a good start to the season for sure. They now rely on Kelly Johnson, Brian Roberts, Derek Jeter and Yangervis Solarte.

Teixeira was injured for the majority of last season. He only played in 15 games last season because of wrist problems. This season, before his injury, he had 13 plate appearances. He has a full no-trade clause as part of the deal including 8 year, $180 million contract. He is being paid $22.5 millions this year, and also for 2015 and 2016.

With Teixeira injured, the Yankees recalled catcher Austin Romine from Triple-A Scranton. When he left the game, Kelly Johnson was moved to first and Brian Roberts came in to play second base.

Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi says Teixeira will indergo an MRI exam when the team returns to New York on Monday.
