Meghan Markle may not have been a royal for long, but she already shares a very close relationship with Queen Elizabeth. In fact, royal experts claim she actually has a sweet nickname for Her Majesty when they are behind closed doors, away from the public eye.

When they are out on royal engagements, the Duchess of Sussex maintains her distance from Queen Elizabeth. Their public relationship seems very formal that some people wonder how they actually deal with each other when the cameras are not rolling.

A royal expert has revealed that while Queen Elizabeth and Meghan’s relationship may seem stiff on the outside, things between them are not always like that. In fact, the Duchess of Sussex has a sweet and sentimental nickname for her grandmother-in-law, which she uses to address her when they are not out for their royal duties.

According to royal expert Ingrid Seward, Meghan calls the Queen “Mama,” the same way that the late Princess Diana addressed the monarch before her fallout with Prince Charles. The royal expert predicted soon after Meghan’s royal wedding with Prince Harry in 2018 that once the Duchess of Sussex gets to know Queen Elizabeth the way Princess Diana did, she would start to call the Queen by her sweet nickname — and she now does.

Despite the controversies and rumors encircling their relationship, Queen Elizabeth and Meghan’s connection remains strong. By referring to her grandmother-in-law as “Mama,” Meghan gets to honor her late mother-in-law and the close relationship she once had with Her Majesty.

The first two years of Meghan’s life as a royal has not been a smooth journey, but as far as her relationship with the Queen is concerned, everything is as great as can be. In fact, on her first year as the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan already had her first solo trip with Queen Elizabeth. This is what makes her different from Kate Middleton, who only got to go on her first solo engagement with the monarch eight years after marrying Prince William.

Queen Elizabeth is also very generous with Meghan to the point of spoiling her. Since the royal wedding, the Queen has already gifted Meghan and Prince Harry with several valuable properties. After giving them the York Cottage on the grounds of the Sandringham Estate last year, she gave them the Adelaide Cottage on Windsor Estate earlier this year so they can raise Baby Sussex in a more private environment.
