For royal followers, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to spend the holidays away from the royal family was controversial enough. When they released their Christmas card this week, however, the royal couple sparked controversy all the more.

Ahead of Christmas, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared their first Christmas card with their first child, Archie Harrison. While their black and white family photo looked lovely in the card, some royal followers could not help but notice something unusual going on with it.

In the said photo, Prince Harry and Meghan are in the background sitting by a twinkling Christmas tree while Baby Archie is at the front and center. What’s weird about the photo is that even though Archie’s parents seem to be standing roughly the same distance behind him, Prince Harry’s face is out of focus while Meghan’s face is crystal clear. Because of this, speculations are now swirling around that the image was actually photoshopped.

Shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan shared the family photo, social media went abuzz with royal followers debating whether the photo had been edited or not. “Check out Meghan’s face, it is photoshopped,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “Her face is clear and everything else is blurred. Archie’s is also photoshopped,” the fan added.

Some royal followers even described the family photo as the worst photoshopped image they had ever seen. “This is quite possibly the worst photoshopped picture I have ever seen. And again with the black and white,” another royal follower noted.

After the image went viral, a photography expert tried to analyze if the Sussexes’ family photo was indeed photoshopped. By flattening out the shadows on Meghan’s face, he discovered that the image of her face had been taken from another similar photograph in the same sheet, and then added onto the photo. “Something’s not right,” said Max Cisotti. “It’s all to do with focal plane. Harry and Meghan are parallel, so if one is in focus, the other would be. They are side by side—it’s not like he’s further forward,” he added.

It remains unknown whether or not Cisotti’s analysis is correct, but royal followers still can’t stop buzzing about it. Some even speculate that the photo had to be photoshopped so Meghan could hide her baby bump.
